28th May 2021

Wedderburn is excited to announce that the revolutionary Patient Transfer Scale (PTS) has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category. The PTS was invented by UK Nurse Gillian Taylor and manufactured by Marsden. Wedderburn is the exclusive distributor of the PTS in Australia and New Zealand and we are proud to be able to offer this unique solution to help improve patient outcomes.

What is the Queen's Award?

The Queen's Award was established in 1965 to recognize and support British companies that have achieved exceptional success.  It is the highest official recognition that any company in the United Kingdom can receive. There are four categories in the award including Innovation, International Trade, Sustainable Development and Promoting Opportunity through Social Mobility.

The selection process begins with a pool of companies recommended by the Prime Minister's Advisory Committee, from which Her Majesty the Queen personally approves the winners. This year only 68 businesses were chosen to receive the Innovation award. Winners can display the Queen’s Award emblem for the next 5 years as an official endorsement.

The Winning Innovation

The invention of UK Emergency Department Nurse, Gillian Taylor secured this prestigious award. Initially launched in 2018, the PTS is a revolutionary weighing solution designed to accurately weigh immobile patients without wasting valuable time, during the lateral transfer process.

Essentially a transfer board with a built-in scale, the PTS has been designed to make the weighing process easier for medical staff and significantly improve patient outcomes. A patient’s weight is needed for accurate drug doses and to obtain a nutritional score, however it can be difficult to determine if the patient is immobile or too unwell to sit or stand on a scale. With the PTS, every patient can be weighed during lateral transfer, eliminating the need to estimate a patient's weight.

Gillian Taylor, inventor of the PTS says, "A patient's weight can be critical to delivering the right treatment at the right time. With the PTS now available, every hospital in the world can improve patient care, enhance outcomes and administer medication and treatment with confidence".

The PTS is ideal for a range of hospital departments including emergency – where it means a weight for every patient can easily be recorded on admission. This ensures that drugs can be administered as quickly as patient’s treatment can begin. As the PTS is part of the ongoing procedure of lateral transfer, it eliminates the need for healthcare professionals to perform a separate task in this already time critical environment.

Congratulations to inventor Gillian Taylor and manufacturer Marsden on this prestigious award.
